"Pathfinding" is a Icon Nature.pngNature Item Power for Heroes' equipment that causes his entire stack to move overland as though on a Road. It may be added to Jewelry via Enchant Item or Create Artifact. None of the pre-defined items in the game data have this Power.

Effect Edit

A "Pathfinding" Item attunes the wearer to his natural surroundings. He can detect paths through the backcountry like a native animal and serve as a guide for the wizard's forces. The Official Strategy Guide describes Pathfinding as "mind-bogglingly useful"— an accurate assessment. The skill speeds up scouting, invasions, and mobile defense.

"Pathfinding" grants the Hero the Move Pathfinding Pathfinding sphere of movement. He and his army may traverse any land terrain at a cost of just Icon Movement Ground0.5 per tile.

"Pathfinding" is of no help to a Move Flying Flying unit stack. Less expectedly, a Move PathfindingMove Swimming Pathfinding/Swimming stack is treated as Non-Corporeal for the purposes of using Enchanted Roads; i.e., they will need to be escorted along these by a basic, landbound Move Boot Walking unit, so that this unit shuts down the group's ability to swim or water-walk.

This Item Power's strengths and limitations are exactly as per Unit Enchantment Spell, though you do not need to be able to research or cast a Path Finding spell. The Item Power cannot be dispelled while worn, but its effects will dissipate immediately if the Hero ever removes or loses the item.

Strategy Edit

With Artificer and Runemaster, "Pathfinding" is a highly-useful perk of focusing on Icon Nature.pngNature Books in your initial profile, perhaps with the goals in mind to be able to explore the map quickly and obtain more green books to qualify for "Regeneration". Pathfinders with an allowance of Icon Movement Ground2 can move over land squares even faster than most Icon Movement AirFlyers.

"Pathfinding" is readily-available (though more expensive without the Retorts) through Enchant Item, so it may be used to great effect in the unfortunate absence of Pathfinding units and heroes, or the spell. Two heroes possess this trait by default and obviate the need for this Power:

Acquisition Edit

Proactive Item Crafting is the only means of obtaining a magical item with "Pathfinding".

Enchant Item & Create Artifact Edit

With Icon Nature.png3, "Pathfinding" may be added to Jewelry of your own design through Icon Arcane.png Enchant Item and Create Artifact. Creating your own equipment with these spells is expensive and time-consuming, but cheaper with the Artificer and Runemaster Retorts.
