Orc Halberdiers are a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created at an Orc town, for the Construction Cost of Icon Production.png 40. The town must already contain an Armory for this to be possible.

Like all Halberdiers, Orc Halberdiers are a main-line defensive unit, capable of holding its own in a fight with other Normal Units, especially after gaining some Experience. As with all units belonging to the Orc race, Orc Halberdiers possess no special racial bonuses or abilities to elevate them beyond the basic Halberdiers template. As a result however they are cheaper to produce, so large armies of them can be created fairly easily.

Orc Halberdiers require an Upkeep Cost of Icon Gold.png 1 and Icon Food.png 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.

Unit Properties Edit

Physical Description Edit

Orc Halberdiers are a group of short, ugly, red-skinned humanoids, dressed in simple loincloths. Orc Halberdiers carry halberds - long poles topped with large axe blades, used either for stabbing or for hacking at enemies while fending them off. Like most Orcs, Orc Halberdiers are quite mundane, possessing no great or fantastic qualities, but also no glaring disadvantages.

Orc Halberdiers are a Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure unit, containing Icon Figure.png 6 figures when fully healed.

Attack Properties Edit

Orc Halberdiers use a Melee Attack for hand-to-hand combat, which is relatively strong compared to that of other Normal Units. They can thus take on most Normal Unit with good chances of success, and even pose a small threat to low-tier Fantastic Units, especially after gaining some Icon Experience.png Experience.

Each Halberdier makes a Melee Attack with a strength of Icon Melee Normal.png 4. With no additional bonuses, this delivers an average damage output of about Icon Damage.png 1.2, so with 6 Halberdiers attacking in unison there's a good chance that several hits will connect. This attack is particularly dangerous to other, lightly-armored Normal Units.

Defense Properties Edit

The Orc Halberdiers possess a Defense score of Icon Defense.png 3 - just slightly better than the average for Normal Units. They can deflect about Icon Damage.png 0.9 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This can reliably fend off some damage from enemy Spearmen or Swordsmen, but is unlikely to stop any serious attack.

As with most Normal Units, each Orc Halberdier possesses only Icon Hits.png 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Icon Damage.png Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its Icon Figure.png figures.

For purposes of defending against Curses and other combat maledictions, the Orc Halberdiers have a very-low Resistance score of Icon Resist.png 4 - barely enough to protect them from such effects.

Other Properties Edit

Orc Halberdiers move at a slow Icon Movement Ground1, and can only traverse land tiles. The unit has no special movement properties.

Basic Strategy Edit

Halberdiers are a step up from main-line Swordsmen units. Though Orc Halberdiers are twice as expensive as Orc Swordsmen, they are both stronger and more durable in Melee combat. Thus, an empire that can afford to build Orc Halberdiers will often fill its armies with them as fodder and defensive troops, possibly even replacing the Swordsmen entirely.

Orc Halberdiers are often superior in combat to enemy low-tier Normal Units. Though Halberdiers are more vulnerable to Ranged Attacks than Swordsmen, and will still suffer casualties in almost any fight, they deliver a good amount of damage to their opponents and can occasionally wipe an enemy unit out with one attack.

Orc Halberdiers can band together with other Halberdiers or Swordsmen to take out a stronger enemy unit, up to and including low-tier Fantastic Units. Again, expect casualties among the ranks even if you do win the fight.

Ability Overview Edit

The Orc Halberdiers unit has no abilities listed in its unit details panel. It has to rely only on its primary combat properties during battle.

Experience Table Edit

The following table illustrates how Orc Halberdiers improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.

Average Damage Output Edit

The table below details the average amount of damage that each Icon Figure.png Figure in an Orc Halberdiers unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Icon Experience Level.png Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.

Acquisition Edit

Orc Halberdiers may be produced in any Orc Town.

A town must contain an Armory to be able to produce Orc Halberdiers. Should a town lose its Armory, it can no longer produce Orc Halberdiers until a replacement structure is built.

The Construction Cost of this unit is Icon Production.png 40.

Orc Halberdiers may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Icon Gold.png Gold that depends on many different factors. Orc Halberdiers Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
