Orc Cavalry is a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created at a Orc town, for the Construction Cost of Icon Production.png 40. The town must already contain both a Barracks and a Stables for this to be possible.

Like all Cavalry, Orc Cavalry are a fast-moving Melee Attack unit, capable of quick strikes through or around the enemy line. Sadly, they are the only Cavalry unit that does not possess First Strike properties, making it a little more difficult to use. As with all units belonging to the Orc race, Orc Cavalry possess no special racial bonuses or abilities to elevate them beyond the basic Cavalry template.

Orc Cavalry requires an Upkeep Cost of Icon Gold.png 1 and Icon Food.png 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.

Physical Description Edit

Orc Cavalry are a group of short, ugly, red-skinned humanoids, dressed in simple loincloths and mounted on dark-brown steeds. These horsemen fight with swords from horseback. Like most Orcs, Orc Cavalry are quite mundane, possessing no great or fantastic qualities, but also no glaring disadvantages.

Orc Cavalry is a Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure unit, containing Icon Figure.png 4 figures when fully healed.

Attack Properties Edit

Orc Cavalry possesses a mid-tier Melee Attack which has the same basic properties as a unit of Orc Halberdiers.

Each Orc Cavalryman attacks with Icon Melee Normal.png 4. With no additional bonuses, this delivers an average damage output of about Icon Damage.png 1.2, giving the unit a good chance of slipping a few points of damage past weaker armor. Attack strength quickly grows with Icon Experience.png Experience, and can become more useful against stronger armor as well.

Unfortunately, unlike other Cavalry units, Orc Cavalry lacks the ability of First Strike. This means that no matter what, the Orc Cavalry delivers its Melee Damage simultaneously with the enemy it is attacking. As a result, it is much harder to keep Orc Cavalry alive during a charge.

Defense Properties Edit

Orc Cavalry possesses a Defense score of Icon Defense.png 2, which is rather weak. They can deflect about Icon Damage.png 0.6 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This is barely enough to save them from anything but the weakest attackers.

On the other hand, each Cavalryman possesses Icon Hits.png 3 Hit Points, for a total of Icon Hits.png 12 for a fully-healthy unit. This helps keep the Orc Cavalry in the battle a little longer.

For purposes of defending against Curses and other combat maledictions, the Orc Cavalry have a very-low Resistance score of Icon Resist.png 4 - barely enough to protect them from such effects.

Other Properties Edit

Orc Cavalry are faster than most Normal Units, moving at Icon Movement Ground2. This allows them to move more freely on the battlefield, reaching the enemy's Ranged Attackers more easily or responding to emergencies in a more timely fashion.

Basic Strategy Edit

Due to the lack of the First Strike ability, Orc Cavalry can be seen as a faster-moving and slightly healthier version of the Orc Halberdiers. They primarily provide a good way to outflank an enemy force, take out Ranged Attackers, or overall control the flow of battle better - but do not provide the same benefits as other Cavalry units do.

During battle, the Orc Cavalry will likely want to head right around the enemy's force and engage his Ranged Attackers in the rear. These pose a smaller threat to the Orc Cavalry, and thus can be taken out rather easily.

Alternatively (or after they've completed the above task), Orc Cavalry do not really provide much of an advantage over Orc Halberdiers. They have better staying-power thanks to their additional Hit Points, and can quickly react to the changing situation on the battlefield thanks to their speed, but overall are roughly comparable to Orc Halberdiers and almost interchangeable with them. If your tactics rely more on a static defensive line (protecting your Ranged Attack units), Orc Halberdiers may be the better choice. For more fluid battle tactics, Orc Cavalry are best.

With some Experience accumulated, Orc Cavalry can gang up to defeat stronger units, such as low-tier Fantastic Creatures. Still, expect casualties among the Cavalry due to weak armor and a lack of First Strike.

Thanks to their speed, Orc Cavalry also make good early-game scouts - though they cannot cross Oceans and move slowly through rough terrain.

Acquisition Edit

Orc Cavalry may be produced in any Orc Town.

A town must contain both a Barracks and a Stables to be able to produce Orc Cavalry. Should a town lose an existing Barracks or Stables, it can no longer produce Orc Cavalry until replacement structures are built.

The Construction Cost of this unit is Icon Production.png 40.

Orc Cavalry may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Icon Gold.png Gold that depends on many different factors. Orc Cavalry Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
