Like all Bowmen, Orc Bowmen provide a basic Ranged Attack capability, along with similarly basic Melee Attack and Defense properties. While unlikely to cause damage at most ranges, Orc Bowmen do become more deadly with Experience, and are useful when massed. As with all units belonging to the Orc race, Orc Bowmen possess no special racial bonuses or abilities to elevate them beyond the basic Bowmen template. As a result however they are cheaper to produce, so large armies of them can be created fairly easily.
Orc Bowmen require an Upkeep Cost of 1 and 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.
Unit Properties Edit
Physical Description Edit
Orc Bowmen are a group of short, ugly, red-skinned humanoids, dressed in simple loincloths. They carry bows and arrows, which can be fired at enemies from a distance. They also carry short swords for situations where hand-to-hand combat is unavoidable. Like most Orcs, Orc Bowmen are quite mundane, possessing no great or fantastic qualities, but also no glaring disadvantages.
Attack Properties Edit
The Bowmen's Ranged Attack has a strength of 1. At very close range (up to 2 tiles from the target) each bowmen delivers an average of only 0.3 points of Damage - barely enough to penetrate the armor on any decent enemy unit. This value decreases further with distance, so even with all 6 Bowmen attacking together, actual damage to any target beyond 2 tiles away is unlikely.
The unit's Melee Attack has the same strength - 1 - but of course does not suffer from distance penalties as it cannot be used at a distance anyway. It will inflict an average of 0.3 Damage points per Bowman - again barely enough to get through any decent armor.
Defense Properties Edit
Orc Bowmen possess a Defense score of 1 - making them extremely vulnerable to damage. The unit can only block about 0.3 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. Pretty much any attack is guaranteed to injure this unit.
As with most Normal Units, each Orc Bowman possesses only 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its figures.
These values further serve to discourage allowing the Bowmen to engage in any Melee combat, as the unit will surely be destroyed.
Other Properties Edit
Basic Strategy Edit
As explained above, Orc Bowmen are virtually useless when initially created, being barely able to cause any damage to enemy units.
During the very early game, Bowmen can confer some advantage against early enemy armies due to sheer volume of attacks. While the enemy slowly advances, the Bowmen can shoot repeatedly in an attempt to actually kill a few enemy figures before they reach your units. Sadly, this will stop working as soon as decently-armored enemies appear.
As a result, Orc Bowmen will generally tag along with other units, hoping to win Experience from any battles whether they contribute or not. This is the only way to prepare them to do real combat later on, when stronger enemies appear. In the late-early part of the campaign and beyond, low-level Orc Bowmen are absolutely useless until they can gain some serious Experience.
Ability Overview Edit
- This unit may use a Ranged Missile Attack instead of a Melee Attack up to 8 times in each battle. Once the unit's ammo is expended, it must resort to Melee Attacks.
Experience Table Edit
The following table illustrates how Orc Bowmen improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.
|Level Icon||Level Name||EP||Melee||Ranged||To Hit||Defense||Resist||Hits|
|Recruit||0 - 19||1||1||30%||1||4||1|
|Regular||20 - 59||2||2||30%||1||5||1|
|Veteran||60 - 119||2||2||30%||2||6||1|
Average Damage Output Edit
The table below details the average amount of damage that each Figure in an Orc Bowmen unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.
A town must contain both a Barracks and a Sawmill to be able to produce Orc Bowmen. Should a town lose an existing Barracks or Sawmill, it can no longer produce Orc Bowmen until replacement structures are built.
The Construction Cost of this unit is 30.
Orc Bowmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Orc Bowmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
