Like all Spearmen, Lizardmen Spearmen are a very basic combat unit which doesn't pose much of a threat to any serious opponent, though they can become a little stronger through Experience. Lizardmen possess a few important racial benefits though: the ability to move through (and fight in) Ocean tiles, as well as increased Defense and doubled Hit Points for better survivability.
Lizardmen Spearmen require an Upkeep Cost of only 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.

Physical Description Edit
Lizardmen Spearmen are a group of bipedal reptilian humanoids, covered in thick green scales. They wear tattered rags of blue and green, and carry spears - long shafts of wood tipped with sharp metal points. These are used for stabbing at enemies within hand-to-hand combat range. Lizardmen are physically resilient, can swim as easily as they can walk, and their scales provide them better protection from enemy weapons than a suit of chainmail armor.
Attack Properties Edit
Each Spearman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of 1. With no additional bonuses this gives each Spearman an average damage output of only 0.3, or rather, there is only a 30% chance for each Spearman to inflict any damage on the opponent. This is before allowing the opponent to make Defense rolls to deflect this damage. Therefore the Lizardmen Spearmen are highly unlikely to get through any armor at all.
Mitigating this slightly, a fully healed unit contains 8 Spearmen, so there are 8 separate chances to inflict damage. This still isn't much, so the Lizardmen Spearmen's Melee Attack should not be counted upon to do any significant amount of damage to anything but the weakest enemy units, at least until they gain some Experience.
Defense Properties Edit
The Lizardmen Spearmen possess a Defense score of 3 - a reasonably good score, normally possessed by mid-tier Normal Units. They can deflect about 0.9 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This can help prevent damage from weak enemy units such as other Spearmen or even Swordsmen.
Lizardmen in general are significantly healthier than other Races, giving each Lizardmen Spearman 2 Hit Points - twice the health of low-tier Normal Units. In other words, it will take 2 points of Damage to kill off one Lizardmen Spearman.
Other Properties Edit
Normally, Lizardmen Spearmen move at a slow 1, both on the overland map and during combat. However, like all Lizardmen units, the Lizardmen Spearmen also possess the ability to Swim. They move at a rate of 1 across Ocean tiles, and can participate in combat on the ocean (moving at the same rate).
Basic Strategy Edit
Nonetheless, extra Hit Points and Defense makes this unit very resilient to damage, allowing it to survive longer during combat. It can stand up well to other low-tier Normal Units, and is much more likely to survive combat at all.
A horde of Spearmen can gang up on a stronger unit in order to whittle it down. Fortunately, along with a few other types of Spearmen, Lizardmen Spearmen are the cheapest units in the game to produce, and thus hordes of them are not too difficult to acquire.
Note that the Lizardmen Spearmen's Swimming ability allows them to travel anywhere on the map, possibly conquering Towns on other continents early in the game, harassing empires that do not defend their shoreline properly, and generally making surprise attacks wherever they please.

Lizardmen Spearmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Lizardmen Spearmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
