Gnoll Swordsmen are a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created at a Gnoll town, for the Construction Cost of 20. The town must already contain both a Barracks and a Smithy for this to be possible.
Like all Swordsmen, Gnoll Swordsmen are a main-line combat unit, capable of holding its own in a fight with other Normal Units, especially after gaining some Experience. Gnoll Swordsmen also enjoy a racial bonus to their Melee Attack, making them significantly more deadly than other Swordsmen. This unit also enjoys a Large Shield bonus which gives it some protection from Ranged Attacks.
Gnoll Swordsmen require an Upkeep Cost of 1 and 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.
Unit Properties Edit
Physical Description Edit
Gnoll Swordsmen are a group of fur-covered humanoids, more akin to jackals than to humans. They wear the blue tunics that are a standard part of the Gnoll army uniform. Gnoll Swordsmen each carry a sword for up-close-and-personal combat, and a large purple buckler which protects them from enemy arrows and other ranged attacks.
Attack Properties Edit
Gnoll Swordsmen use a Melee Attack for hand-to-hand combat, and enjoy a racial bonus of +2 that is common to all Normal Units from the Gnoll Race. This bonus makes their attack surprisingly strong, and enables them to threaten most other Normal Units and even low-tier Fantastic Units. With Experience, this attack can become even more fearsome.
Each Swordsman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of 5. This delivers an average damage output of about 1.5, so with 6 Swordsmen attacking in unison there's a good chance that several hits will connect. This attack is useful primarily against lightly-armored units, such as other low-tier Normal Units, but can occasionally cause some damage to better-armored opponents.
Defense Properties Edit
The Gnoll Swordsmen possess a Defense score of 2, and is their main drawback. They can deflect about 0.6 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This is rarely enough to save them from anything but the weakest attackers.
As with most Normal Units, each Gnoll Swordsman possesses only 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its figures.
Other Properties Edit
Basic Strategy Edit
Gnoll Swordsmen are significantly stronger than the basic Gnoll Spearmen. With a much better Melee Attack and the added defense against Ranged Attacks and certain Special Attacks, the Gnoll Swordsmen can serve as a fearsome main-line unit, bolstering the strength of larger armies.
Gnoll Swordsmen can do good damage in a fight against most low-tier Normal Units. While the Swordsmen are unlikely to survive combat with stronger opponents, and are still vulnerable to most enemy units, they can cause serious damage before they are taken out. Several Gnoll Swordsmen can band together to take out a stronger enemy unit, up to and including low-tier Fantastic Units. Fortunately, Gnoll Swordsmen are relatively cheap to produce and thus can form large armies. Still, expect plenty of casualties in combat against any serious opponent.
A line of advancing Swordsmen can stand up fairly well to the foes it's likely to meet. It can weather Ranged Attack volleys to close with the enemy and batter it down - though it's still recommended to mix in some other units to aid the Swordsmen in their fight, decreasing casualties.
Ability Overview Edit
- This unit receives a temporary Defense of +2 against all types of Ranged Attacks, Thrown Attacks and Breath Attacks.
Experience Table Edit
The following table illustrates how Gnoll Swordsmen improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.
|Level Icon||Level Name||EP||Melee||To Hit||Defense||Resist||Hits|
|Recruit||0 - 19||5||30%||2||4||1|
|Regular||20 - 59||6||30%||2||5||1|
|Veteran||60 - 119||6||30%||3||6||1|
Average Damage Output Edit
The table below details the average amount of damage that each Figure in a Gnoll Swordsmen unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.
A town must contain both a Barracks and a Smithy to be able to produce Gnoll Swordsmen. Should a town lose an existing Barracks or Smithy, it can no longer produce Gnoll Swordsmen until replacement structures are built.
The Construction Cost of this unit is 30.
Gnoll Swordsmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Gnoll Swordsmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
