Like all Spearmen, Draconian Spearmen are a very basic combat unit which doesn't pose much of a threat to any serious opponent, though they can become a little stronger through Experience. Draconians possess a few important racial benefits though: They have a better Defense score, a better Resistance score, can Fly at a great speed, and can even Breathe Fire. These traits normally elevate Draconian Spearmen to a higher level of deadliness. On the other hand, Draconian Spearmen are 150% more expensive than any other Spearmen.
Draconian Spearmen require an Upkeep Cost of only 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.
Unit Properties Edit
Physical Description Edit
Draconian Spearmen are a group of dragon-kin, humanoids descended from dragons. They are covered in thick green scales from head to toe, they have long thin tails, reptilian heads, and two great dragon wings that enable them to fly. Draconian Spearmen carry spears - long shafts of wood tipped with sharp metal points. These are used for stabbing at enemies within hand-to-hand combat range. Draconians are also quite resistant to magic, and their scales provide strong protection.
Attack Properties Edit
Draconian Spearmen initially possess a very weak Melee Attack, which will only be threatening to other low-tier Normal Units. It is also backed up by a weak-but-useful Breath Attack. Both attacks get a little stronger with Experience.
Each Spearman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of 1. This delivers an average damage output of only 0.3, or rather, there is only a 30% chance for each Spearman to inflict any damage on the opponent. This is even before allowing the opponent to make Defense rolls to deflect this damage! Therefore the Draconian Spearmen are highly unlikely to get through any armor at all.
Mitigating this slightly, a fully healed unit contains 8 Spearmen, so there are 8 separate chances to inflict damage. This still isn't much, so the Draconian Spearmen's Melee Attack should not be counted upon to do any significant amount of damage to anything but the weakest enemy units, at least until they gain some Experience.
More importantly however, when the unit makes a voluntary Melee Attack against an enemy unit, it first executes a Fire Breath attack, with a strength of 1 per Spearman. Again, this will cause about 0.3 on average, with 8 separate attempts to get through the enemy's armor. Any enemy figure that actually gets killed by this attack cannot deliver any Melee Damage back at the Spearmen.
Note that the Draconian Spearmen may not use their Breath Attack when Counter Attacking. Also, because this attack delivers Fire Damage, targets possessing Magic Immunity and/or Fire Immunity will suffer no damage from it whatsoever.
Defense Properties Edit
The Draconian Spearmen possess a Defense score of 3 - a reasonably good score, normally possessed by mid-tier Normal Units. They can deflect about 0.9 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This can help prevent damage from weak enemy units such as other Spearmen or even Swordsmen.
As with most Normal Units, each Draconian Spearman possesses only 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its figures.
For purposes of defending against Curses and other combat maledictions, the Draconian Spearmen have an above-average Resistance score of 6. This can protect them from some ill effects, but will probably fail about as often as it succeeds. With Experience however, Draconian Spearmen can become surprisingly resistant to a large variety of ill effects.
Other Properties Edit
As Flying units, Draconian Spearmen can easily scout and attack across Oceans. This means that no body of water is a safe barrier to hide behind when a Draconian empire is nearby. Their high flying speed also means that they can attack quickly, retreat easily, and evade enemy armies rather well.
During combat, the fast Flying ability allows Draconian Spearmen to maneuver around enemy lines with ease, and protects them from most Melee Attacks by enemy ground units. Furthermore, the high speed allows the Draconian Spearmen to use their Breath Attack frequently, as it enables them to choose their targets carefully and decide when and where to attack.
Finally, the Draconian Spearmen's Flying ability gives them an automatic Sight Range bonus, enabling them to see two tiles away on the overland map (including diagonally).
Basic Strategy Edit
Draconian Spearmen are the most basic (and weakest) Normal Unit available to the Draconian race. Nonetheless, access to both fast Flight and Breath Attack capabilities make them significantly more dangerous than other Spearmen - if used properly.
During battle, Draconian Spearmen will generally seek to make sudden charges at enemy units, attacking with both their Breath Attack and Melee Attack. When this is done voluntarily (i.e. the Draconian Spearmen voluntarily attacking an enemy unit), the Breath Attack kicks in and may kill a few enemy figures, weakening the target before the exchange of Melee Damage takes place.
Remember that this Breath Attack does not occur when the Draconian Spearmen are Counter Attacking. However, Draconian Spearmen are fast enough to withdraw after each attack in order to prevent this. Also, their Flying ability means that most ground units cannot make Melee Attacks against them in the first place, meaning that sometimes it's not even necessary to withdraw after every attack.
Nonetheless, Draconian Spearmen will generally limit themselves to attacking weak enemy Normal Units. The reasoning behind this is that it increases the chance for the Spearmen's Breath Attack to kill a few enemy figures, thus reducing the damage that the Spearmen will take during the enemy's Counter Attack. Stronger units might not be weakened at all, and their Counter Attack can rather-easily kill several of the Spearmen.
A horde of Spearmen can gang up on a stronger unit in order to whittle it down, but do not expect Draconian Spearmen to stand up to any Fantastic Creature, at least not until they gain plenty of Experience. Even then, they are probably not going to win such an encounter. Also, hordes of Draconian Spearmen are difficult to produce due to their high Construction Cost.
Finally, remember that Draconian Spearmen can fly on the overland map as well as in combat. They make excellent, cheap scouts, and can make surprise raids and invasions across rough terrain or large bodies of water very easily. Use this to your advantage.
Ability Overview Edit
- Whenever this unit makes a Melee Attack against an enemy target, it also delivers a Fire Damage Breath Attack with a strength of 1 per figure.
- As a Breath Attack, this damage is delivered before the enemy gets the chance to retaliate. Any figures in the target unit that are killed by the attack do not get to deliver any Melee Damage.
- This Breath Attack does not occur when the unit is Counter Attacking against an enemy assailant.
- This effect does nothing against targets possessing the Magic Immunity or Fire Immunity abilities.
Experience Table Edit
The following table illustrates how Draconian Spearmen improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.
|Level Icon||Level Name||EP||Melee||Breath||To Hit||Defense||Resist||Hits|
|Recruit||0 - 19||1||1||30%||3||6||1|
|Regular||20 - 59||2||2||30%||3||7||1|
|Veteran||60 - 119||2||2||30%||4||8||1|
Average Damage Output Edit
The table below details the average amount of damage that each Figure in a Draconian Spearmen unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.
The Construction Cost of this unit is 25.
Draconian Spearmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Draconian Spearmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
