All Fantastic Creatures belonging to the Icon Life.pngLife realm receive the following penalties:

Darkness is a Common Combat Enchantment belonging to the Icon Death.pngDeath Magic realm. For Icon Mana.png 25 it may be cast during combat to give a lasting effect, whereby all Fantastic Creatures from the Icon Death.pngDeath realm (including the Undead) receive a +1 bonus to most of their combat properties, including Melee Attack, Ranged Attack, Defense, Resistance and several Special Attacks. Simultaneously, all Fantastic Creatures from the Icon Life.pngLife realm receive a -1 penalty to the same properties.

Effects Edit

Darkness covers the battlefield in infernal energy. This energy will increase the combat prowess of all Icon Death.pngDeath creatures, while simultaneously reducing the combat prowess of all Icon Life.pngLife creatures.

Death Creature Bonuses Edit

While Darkness is in effect over the battlefield, each and every Fantastic Unit of the Icon Death.pngDeath realm will receive the bonuses outlined below.

The spell doesn't care about the unit's allegiance, so it will affect enemy Icon Death.pngDeath creatures as well as friendly ones.

Note that Undead units are considered as belonging to the Icon Death.pngDeath realm - and so will also be affected by Darkness.

Melee Attack Bonus Edit

Darkness gives a Melee Attack bonus of Icon Melee Normal.png +1 to the affected units - assuming they had any Melee Attack ability to begin with.
This increases the unit's damage potential by a small amount, and will also increase its average damage output.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant bonus because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives Icon Melee Normal.png +1 to its attack strength, as per the normal combat rules.

Ranged Attack Bonus Edit

Darkness gives a Ranged Attack bonus of Icon Ranged Bow.png +1 (or Icon Ranged Magic.png +1 or Icon Ranged Boulder.png +1 as appropriate) to the affected units - assuming they had any Ranged Attack ability to begin with.
This increases the unit's damage potential by a small amount, and will also increase its average damage output.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant bonus because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives Icon Ranged Bow.png +1 to its attack strength, as per the normal combat rules.

Special Attack Bonus Edit

Any affected unit that possesses a direct-damage Special Attack, such as Fire Breath or Thrown Attack etc., will receive a +1 bonus to the strength of this attack.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant bonus because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives +1 to its special attack strength, as per the normal combat rules.
A full list of Special Attacks affected by this bonus would be hard to make and to test properly. In theory, any Special Attack that delivers Icon Damage.png Damage to the target unit will be affected. Special Attacks that require the target to make Resistance rolls are not affected.

Defense Bonus Edit

Darkness gives a Defense bonus of Icon Defense.png +1 to the affected units.
As a result, each unit will be able to block at least 1 extra Icon Damage.png point of damage from any attack. Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units may be able to block more than Icon Damage.png 1 thanks to this bonus, as they sometimes get to make additional Defense rolls against the same attack.

Resistance Bonus Edit

Darkness gives a Resistance bonus of Icon Resist.png +1 to the affected units.
As a result, these units are now slightly harder to affect with curses, and will stand up better against several types of Special Attacks (like Stoning Gaze, etc.).
Any unit that reaches Icon Resist.png 10 thanks to this bonus is now immune to most ill effects. Only such effects that incur a penalty to Resistance will be able to hurt such a unit.

Life Creature Penalties Edit

While Darkness is in effect over the battlefield, each and every Fantastic Unit of the Icon Life.pngLife realm will receive the penalties outlined below.

The spell doesn't care about the unit's allegiance, so it will affect enemy Icon Life.pngLife creatures as well as friendly ones.

Melee Attack Penalty Edit

Darkness gives a Melee Attack penalty of Icon Melee Normal.png -1 to the affected units - assuming they had any Melee Attack ability to begin with.
This reduces the unit's damage potential by a small amount, and will also decrease its average damage output.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant penalty because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives Icon Melee Normal.png -1 to its attack strength, as per the normal combat rules. Since many Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units are inherently weak, this penalty can make them unable to do any damage to anyone!
If the unit's Melee Attack strength reaches Icon Melee Normal.png 0 due to this penalty, the unit will no longer be able to initiate Melee attacks against enemy units. It will be able to Counter Attack, but will cause no damage when doing so - unless it also possesses Special Attacks which can inflict damage or kill off enemy figures.

Ranged Attack Penalty Edit

Darkness gives a Ranged Attack penalty of Icon Ranged Bow.png -1 (or Icon Ranged Magic.png -1 or Icon Ranged Boulder.png -1 as appropriate) to the affected units - assuming they had any Ranged Attack ability to begin with.
This reduces the unit's damage potential by a small amount, and will also reduce its average damage output.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant penalty because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives Icon Ranged Bow.png -1 to its attack strength, as per the normal combat rules. Since many Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units are inherently weak, this penalty can make them unable to do any damage to anyone!
If the unit's Ranged Attack strength reaches Icon Ranged Bow.png 0 due to this penalty, the unit will no longer be able to use Ranged Attacks against enemy units.

Special Attack Penalty Edit

Any affected unit that possesses a direct-damage Special Attack, such as Fire Breath or Thrown Attack etc., will receive a -1 penalty to the strength of this attack.
For Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure units, this is a much more significant bonus because each individual Icon Figure.png figure receives -1 to its special attack strength, as per the normal combat rules.
If any such Special Attack reaches a strength of 0 due to the penalty, that Special Attack will no longer be used during combat.
A full list of Special Attacks affected by this bonus would be hard to make and to test properly. In theory, any Special Attack that delivers Icon Damage.png Damage to the target unit will be affected. Special Attacks that require the target to make Resistance rolls are not affected.

Defense Penalty Edit

Darkness gives a Defense penalty of Icon Defense.png -1 to the affected units.
As a result, each unit will be have 1 less chance to block Icon Damage.png Damage from any attack. This makes the unit more vulnerable to weak attackers, and obviously means that it will suffer more damage from strong attackers.

Resistance Penalty Edit

Darkness gives a Resistance penalty of Icon Resist.png -1 to the affected units.
As a result, these units are now slightly easier to affect with Curses, and will also be more vulnerable to several types of Special Attacks (like Stoning Gaze, etc.).
Units dropping from Icon Resist.png 10 to Icon Resist.png 9 are now no longer immune to the majority of Curses - though they will still be pretty resistant to them.
Units that reach Icon Resist.png 0 (however unlikely) will be completely susceptible to all Curses and special attacks!

True Light vs. Darkness Edit

The Icon Life.pngLife spell True Light and Icon Death.pngDeath spell Darkness are designed to be identical and opposite. True Light gives bonuses to Icon Life.pngLife creatures and penalizes Icon Death.pngDeath creatures, while Darkness gives the same exact bonuses to Icon Death.pngDeath creatures and the same penalties to Icon Life.pngLife creatures.

The two spells are not mutually exclusive on the battlefield. Therefore, it is possible to have both spells affecting the battle simultaneously. Because they are equal and opposite effects, they essentially cancel each other out.

In other words, if one side casts Darkness, the other side may cast True Light to cancel it out. Both spells remain in effect, but neither does anything! The same is opposite in reverse - casting Darkness to nullify the effects of True Light.

Usage Edit

Darkness may be cast during combat for the basic Casting Cost of Icon Mana.png 25. It will immediately affect all Fantastic Units belonging to the Icon Death.pngDeath Realm.

After casting the spell, its icon will appear in the "Enchantments" window underneath the casting wizard's name. The spell will remain in effect until the end of battle, or until dispelled by the opponent. Since it does not carry on after the end of the battle, Darkness has no Upkeep Cost.

Acquisition Edit

As a Common Icon Death.pngDeath spell, Darkness may become available to any Wizard who possesses at least one Icon Death.pngDeath Spellbook. However, its availability during the game is not guaranteed unless the Wizard acquires at least Icon Death.png7 Spellbooks.

Customized Wizards possessing up to Icon Death.png10 Spellbooks at creation time may choose this spell as one of their default spells before starting the game, in which case the spell will already be researched and available for casting immediately on the first turn. Wizards with Icon Death.png11 Spellbooks are guaranteed to have this spell available for casting as soon as the game begins.

Wizards with Icon Death.png6 or fewer Spellbooks who have not chosen Darkness as a guaranteed spell have a random chance of being able to Research it. The chance for this spell to appear increases with the number of Icon Death.pngDeath Spellbooks the Wizard possesses or obtains during gameplay. With Icon Death.png7-10 Spellbooks, the spell is guaranteed to appear for Research if it is not alraedy available for casting.

Darkness has a base Research Cost of Icon Research.png 250.

With at least Icon Death.png1 Spellbook, the Darkness spell may be acquired as a reward for winning encounters in creature Lairs, Towers, et cetera, or when conquering the Fortress of a rival wizard who has already researched this spell.

Strategy Edit

Darkness is a great and quick way to empower an army made up primarily of Icon Death.pngDeath and/or Undead units. It should probably be used when your army contains at least two or three such units, to get the most out of its Casting Cost.

Alternatively, Darkness can be used to weaken an entire enemy army made up primarily of Icon Life.pngLife units. It can instantly swing the advantage in your favour - assuming of course that the enemy does not cast True Light in response.
