Dark Elf Spearmen are a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created from any Dark Elf town, for the Construction Cost of Icon Production.png 25.

Like all Spearmen, Dark Elf Spearmen are a very basic combat unit which doesn't pose much of a threat to any serious opponent. However, all Dark Elves are inherently-magical creatures, and possess two powerful racial bonuses which serve to elevate this specific unit above other Spearmen: It has a basic Magical Ranged Attack, and a surprisingly-high Resistance score. These bonuses come at a price of course, with Dark Elf Spearmen costing 150% more to produce than a basic Spearmen unit. Dark Elf Spearmen are thus quite strong, but also less abundant.

Dark Elf Spearmen require an Upkeep Cost of only Icon Food.png1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.

Unit Properties Edit

Physical Description Edit

Dark Elf Spearmen are a group of slender humanoids with violet-colored skin and white hair. They carry wear brown leather clothes and carry spears - long shafts of wood tipped with sharp metal points. These are used for stabbing at enemies within hand-to-hand combat range. Dark Elves are inherently magical beings, and can channel magical energy into a destructive force on a whim. They are also incredibly resistant to magic and other ill effects.

Dark Elf Spearmen are a Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure unit, containing Icon Figure.png 8 figures when fully healed.

Attack Properties Edit

Dark Elf Spearmen initially possess a very weak Melee Attack, which will only be threatening to other low-tier Normal Units. As with all Dark Elves, they also possess a basic Magical Ranged Attack which is used prior to engaging in Melee combat. Both attacks get a little stronger with Icon Experience.png Experience.

Each Spearman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of Icon Melee Normal.png 1. With no additional bonuses this gives each Spearman an average damage output of only Icon Damage.png 0.3, or rather, there is only a 30% chance for each Spearman to inflict any damage on the opponent. This is before allowing the opponent to make Defense rolls to deflect damage. Therefore the Dark Elf Spearmen are highly unlikely to get through any armor at all.

Mitigating this slightly, a fully healed unit contains Icon Figure.png 8 Spearmen, so there are 8 separate chances to inflict damage. This still isn't much, so the Dark Elf Spearmen's Melee Attack should not be counted upon to do any significant amount of damage to anything but the weakest enemy units, at least until they gain some Experience.

Before engaging in Melee however, Dark Elf Spearmen can use a basic Ranged Attack up to 4 times per battle. This attack also has a strength of Icon Ranged Magic.png 1, causing about Icon Damage.png 0.3 points of Damage per Spearman. The benefit of this attack of course is that it can be used at a distance, before engaging the enemy in Melee combat. As a Magical attack, it suffers no penalties for range, making it useful regardless of the position of the target. On the other hand, it will not hurt targets possessing Magic Immunity.

This "secondary" Ranged Attack actually makes Dark Elf Spearmen stronger than the average Bowmen unit. With all Icon Figure.png 8 figures attacking together, it is quite possible to whittle down an enemy Normal Unit so that it poses little danger to the Spearmen themselves, and Melee combat can be safely initiated. This attack also becomes stronger with Experience, and can eventually be quite dangerous to most enemy Normal Units.

Defense Properties Edit

The Dark Elf Spearmen possess a Defense score of Icon Defense.png 2 - just slightly stronger than their attack score. They can deflect about Icon Damage.png 0.6 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This is barely enough to save them from anything but the weakest attackers.

As with most Normal Units, each Dark Elf Spearman possesses only Icon Hits.png 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Icon Damage.png Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its Icon Figure.png figures.

Dark Elves are inherently resistant to magic, and so Dark Elf Spearmen possess an impressive Resistance score of Icon Resist.png 7. While this provides only mediocre protection from Curses and other ill effects, this is still considered high among Normal Units. With additional Experience, the Dark Elf Spearmen can become significantly more resistant to such effects, and may even become immune to some of them as the unit crosses Icon Resist.png 10.

Other Properties Edit

Dark Elf Spearmen move at a slow Icon Movement Ground1, and can only traverse land tiles. The unit has no special movement properties.

Basic Strategy Edit

Dark Elf Spearmen are the most basic (and weakest) Normal Unit available to the Dark Elf race. These units are unlikely to pose a threat to anything other than enemy low-tier Normal Units. However, with their Ranged Attack, Dark Elf Spearmen can literally wipe out such units with alarming speed, even before Melee combat erupts.

At the start of a battle, Dark Elf Spearmen (like most Dark Elf units) will begin by expending their Ranged Attacks at whichever enemy target seems most suitable. The weak nature of this attack means that the best targets are often those that are lightly-armored - since other targets may or may not suffer any damage from this attack at all. Enemy Ranged Attackers, such as Bowmen, as well as enemy Spearmen make good targets for this attack.

Once the Dark Elf Spearmen have run out of Ranged Attacks, they can begin to advance into Melee combat with whatever is left of the enemy. Unfortunately here, the Dark Elf Spearmen are no better than any other Spearmen, and thus are not likely to cause any significant damage to armored opponents.

Dark Elf Spearmen are expensive to produce, making hordes of Dark Elf Spearmen rarer. Still, such hordes can be very powerful during the early game - especially when concentrating their attacks on specific units. Also, since other Dark Elf units are even more expensive, Dark Elf Spearmen hordes may be a good early option anyway.

Do not expect Dark Elf Spearmen to stand up to any Fantastic Creature, at least not until they gain plenty of Experience. Even then, they are probably not going to win such an encounter.

Ability Overview Edit

Ability Quiver Ranged Attack x4 Edit

  • This unit may use a Icon Ranged Magic.png Ranged Magical Attack instead of a Melee Attack up to 4 times in each battle. Once the unit's ammo is expended, it must resort to Melee Attacks.

Average Damage Output Edit

The table below details the average amount of damage that each Icon Figure.png Figure in a Dark Elf Spearmen unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Icon Experience Level.png Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.

Acquisition Edit

Dark Elf Spearmen may be produced in any Dark Elf Town. The town does not require any special Town Buildings to be constructed in order to create Dark Elf Spearmen.

The Construction Cost of this unit is Icon Production.png 25.

Dark Elf Spearmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Icon Gold.png Gold that depends on many different factors. Dark Elf Spearmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
