Like all Cavalry, Dark Elf Cavalry are a fast-moving Melee Attack unit, capable of quick strikes through or around the enemy line. Its attack has First Strike properties, which allows it to hit its enemies first during battle, potentially killing some of them before they can retaliate. Furthermore, all Dark Elves are inherently-magical creatures, and possess two powerful racial bonuses which serve to elevate this specific unit above other Cavalry: It has a basic Magical Ranged Attack, and a surprisingly-high Resistance score. These bonuses come at a price of course, with Dark Elf Cavalry costing 150% more to produce than a basic Cavalry unit. Dark Elf Cavalry are thus quite strong, but also less abundant.
Dark Elf Cavalry requires an Upkeep Cost of 2 and 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.
Unit Properties Edit
Physical Description Edit
Dark Elf Cavalry are a group of slender humanoids with violet-colored skin and white hair, riding on the backs of powerful black steeds. These horsemen wear brown leather clothes and fight with swords from horseback. Dark Elves are inherently magical beings, and can channel magical energy into a destructive force on a whim. They are also incredibly resistant to magic and other ill effects.
Attack Properties Edit
Dark Elf Cavalry possesses a mid-tier Melee Attack which, if used correctly, can maximize damage to the enemy and minimize damage to the Cavalrymen themselves. As with all Dark Elves, they also possess a basic Magical Ranged Attack which is used prior to engaging in Melee combat. Both attacks deliver Physical Damage and will get a little stronger with Experience.
Each Cavalryman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of 4. With no additional bonuses this gives each Cavalryman an average damage output of about 1.2 - giving the unit a good chance of slipping at several points of damage past weaker armor. Attack strength grows quickly with Experience, and can become more useful against stronger armor as well.
When Dark Elf Cavalry makes a voluntary Melee Attack against an enemy unit, it utilizes a First Strike ability. This means that instead of delivering their regular Melee Damage simultaneously with the enemy's Counter Attack, the Cavalry's Melee Damage is delivered before the enemy can retaliate. In other words, any enemy figure killed by the First Strike does not get to make its Counter Attack at all, though it might still get to use a Gaze Attack if it possesses one.
Note that the Dark Elf Cavalry may not use their First Strike when Counter Attacking to an enemy's assault. This means that they will only deliver Melee Damage to their enemies, and will do so at the end of the battle sequence.
Before engaging in Melee however, Dark Elf Cavalry can use a basic Ranged Attack up to 4 times per battle. This attack also has a strength of 1, causing about 0.3 points of Damage per Cavalryman. The benefit of this attack of course is that it can be used at a distance, before engaging the enemy in Melee combat. As a Magical attack, it suffers no penalties for range, making it useful regardless of the position of the target. On the other hand, it will not hurt targets possessing Magic Immunity.
This "secondary" Ranged Attack actually makes Dark Elf Cavalry almost as strong as the average Bowmen unit. With all 4 figures attacking together, it is possible to whittle down an enemy Normal Unit so that it poses little danger to the Cavalry themselves, and then First Strike Melee combat can be initiated to wipe the enemy unit out with no retaliation whatsoever. This attack also becomes stronger with Experience, and can eventually be quite dangerous to most enemy Normal Units.
Defense Properties Edit
Dark Elf Cavalry possesses a Defense score of 2, which is rather weak. They can deflect about 0.6 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This is barely enough to save them from anything but the weakest attackers.
On the other hand, each Cavalryman possesses 3 Hit Points, for a total of 12 for a fully-healthy unit. This helps keep the Dark Elf Cavalry in the battle a little longer. The Cavalry's First Strike, if used properly, can help minimize damage even further.
Dark Elves are inherently resistant to magic, and so Dark Elf Cavalry possess an impressive Resistance score of 7. While this provides only mediocre protection from Curses and other ill effects, this is still considered high among Normal Units. With additional Experience, the Dark Elf Cavalry can become significantly more resistant to such effects, and may even become immune to some of them as the unit crosses 10.
Other Properties Edit
Dark Elf Cavalry are faster than most Normal Units, moving at 2. This is crucial if they wish to utilize First Strike, since it allows the unit to make sudden strikes, withdraw from combat, and outflank the enemy more easily.
Basic Strategy Edit
Though possessing a stronger attack than Spearmen or Swordsmen, Cavalry will only maximize its offensive capabilities when attacking on its own terms. Dark Elf Cavalry can utilize its First Strike to cause severe damage to an enemy unit before it even gets a chance to fight back, and this is important for keeping the Cavalrymen alive. In fact, with their Ranged Attack, Dark Elf Cavalry can destroy such units even before Melee combat erupts. More likely however, they will use this Ranged Attack to weaken an enemy unit to a point where the First Strike will wipe it out.
At the start of a battle, Dark Elf Cavalry (like most Dark Elf units) will begin by expending their Ranged Attacks at whichever enemy target seems most suitable. The weak nature of this attack means that the best targets are often those that are lightly-armored - since other targets may or may not suffer any damage from this attack at all. Enemy Ranged Attackers, such as Bowmen, as well as enemy Spearmen make good targets for this attack.
Once the Dark Elf Cavalry have run out of Ranged Attacks, they will quickly move to engage any weakened enemy unit they can find. Make sure to attack on your own terms, charging the Cavalry into the enemy unit to kill off most or all of its figures. This ensures that the enemy cannot Counter Attack properly, thus reducing risk to the Cavalry themselves.
If possible, try to avoid leaving the Dark Elf Cavalry near any enemy unit at the end of the turn. This ensures that enemies cannot attack the Dark Elf Cavalry voluntarily, which would negate the Cavalry's First Strike, taking away their primary advantage and possibly causing the death of one or more Cavalrymen. Back away from enemy units after each and every attack you make!
With some Experience accumulated, Dark Elf Cavalry can use combine their Ranged Attacks and First Strikes to kill enemy units without taking any damage themselves. This prolongs the life of any Dark Elf Cavalry unit, thus allowing it to get even more Experience and grow even stronger. By the time they reach "Elite" level, Dark Elf Cavalry are quite dangerous even on their own, and may possibly engage low-tier Fantastic Creatures with the same ease that they engage other units. This is especially true with several Dark Elf Cavalry units concentrating their attacks on a single enemy.
Thanks to their speed, Dark Elf Cavalry also make good early-game scouts - though they cannot cross Oceans and move slowly through rough terrain.
Ability Overview Edit
- This unit may use a Ranged Magical Attack instead of a Melee Attack up to 4 times in each battle. Once the unit's ammo is expended, it must resort to Melee Attacks.
- When this unit makes a Melee Attack during its own turn, it delivers its Melee Damage before the target does.
- Any enemy figures killed in the First Strike do not get to deal their own damage to the attacker.
- First Strike damage is dealt after Breath Attacks and Thrown Attacks (if any).
- First Strike does not work when the unit is Counter Attacking (i.e. when retaliating to an attack by an enemy unit).
Experience Table Edit
The following table illustrates how Dark Elf Cavalry improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.
|Level Icon||Level Name||EP||Melee||Ranged||To Hit||Defense||Resist||Hits|
|Recruit||0 - 19||4||1||30%||2||7||3|
|Regular||20 - 59||5||2||30%||2||8||3|
|Veteran||60 - 119||5||2||30%||3||9||3|
Average Damage Output Edit
The table below details the average amount of damage that each Figure in a Dark Elf Cavalry unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.
A town must contain both a Barracks and a Stables to be able to produce Dark Elf Cavalry. Should a town lose an existing Barracks or Stables, it can no longer produce Dark Elf Cavalry until replacement structures are built.
The Construction Cost of this unit is 100.
Dark Elf Cavalry may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Dark Elf Cavalry Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
