|Spell Type||Unit Enchantment|
|Enchanted unit receive +3 and +3 against Curses, combat effects and Fantastic Units belonging to the Chaos and Death realms.|
Bless is a Common Unit Enchantment belonging to the Life Magic realm. For 25 it may be cast on a friendly unit on the overland map to give it a little divine providence. As a result, whenever the unit is targeted by a Curse or combat effect from the Death or Chaos realms, it receives a temporary Resistance bonus of +3. Similarly, whenever the unit is attacked by a Fantastic Creature from the Death or Chaos realms, the Blessed unit temporarily receives +3 to block incoming damage.
Alternatively, a cheaper version of the same spell may be cast for 5 during combat, in which case it will temporarily bestow the same bonus on a unit for the duration of the battle (with no permanent effects or upkeep costs).
Bless gives a unit a modicum of divine protection from various sources of harm originating directly from the Chaos and Death realms, and from Fantastic Creatures belonging to those realms.
Resistance Bonus Edit
This will effectively make it harder for opponents to inflict ill effects on the unit, especially if its Resistance score is raised to at least 10 thanks to this effect (in which case it is immune to such effects). Remember of course that many Curses will also lower the unit's Resistance score, so Bless does not give ultimate protection against all curses.
The same effect is applied when an enemy unit attempts to use a Special Attack associated with the Death or Chaos realms against the Blessed unit. This includes any attacks that delivers Fear Damage, Life Stealing Damage or Death Damage. Again, Bless will raise the unit's Resistance score by +3 for purposes of averting harm from such attacks.
Defense Bonus Edit
Whenever the Blessed unit engages in combat with an enemy Fantastic Unit belonging to the Chaos or Death realms, its Defense score receives a temporary bonus of +3. On average this allows the Blessed unit to block an extra 0.9 from the enemy's attacks.
Remember that the Undead are considered to belong to the Death realm, and thus will always trigger this bonus. Similarly, Chaos Channeled units are considered to belong to the Chaos realm, and will also trigger this bonus.
This defense bonus also applies when blocking and related Special Attacks which deal direct-damage, such as Fire Breath, Lightning Breath and Immolation. Note, that those Special Attacks may also be performed by units that don't belong to either or .
The Blessed unit will also gain partial protection against Ranged Magical Attacks associated with Chaos or Death realms. This includes the ranged attacks from Magicians and most Dark Elves, see Ranged Magical Attack Subtypes for further details.
Furthermore, whenever the unit is targeted by a direct-damage spell from the Death or Chaos realms, it will receive the same +3 bonus. This is especially useful when fighting Chaos-wielding wizards, as they often possess plenty of direct-damage spells.
Bless may only be cast on friendly units.
The spell may be cast during combat for the rather low Casting Cost of 5. In this case, the spell will only affect the targeted unit until the end of the battle - at which point it will dissipate.
Alternatively, Bless may be cast on the overland map for a lasting effect. In this case it has a base Casting Cost of 25, and requires an Upkeep Cost of 1 per turn to maintain. Failure to pay this Upkeep Cost due to lack of Mana will cause the spell to dissipate. However, as long as the spell is paid for (and not dispelled by any rival Wizard), the unit continues to enjoy its bonus.
If the desired target is in an overland army stack, click on that stack to get a list of units inside it, and then select your desired unit.
If you've placed Bless on a unit, you may remove it by examining the unit's details and clicking the Enchantment's icon. The primary reason to do this would be in order to remove the spell's Upkeep Cost, thus conserving Mana for other spells.
As a Common Life spell, Bless may become available to any Wizard who possesses at least one Life Spellbook. However, its availability during the game is not guaranteed unless the Wizard acquires at least 7 Spellbooks.
Customized Wizards possessing up to 10 Spellbooks at creation time may choose this spell as one of their default spells before starting the game, in which case the spell will already be researched and available for casting immediately on the first turn. Wizards with 11 Spellbooks are guaranteed to have this spell available for casting as soon as the game begins.
Wizards with 6 or fewer Spellbooks who have not chosen Bless as a guaranteed spell have a random chance of being able to Research it. The chance for this spell to appear increases with the number of Life Spellbooks the Wizard possesses or obtains during gameplay. With 7-10 Spellbooks, the spell is guaranteed to appear for Research if it is not already available for casting.
Bless has a base Research Cost of 20.
With at least 1 Spellbook, the Bless spell may be acquired as a reward for winning encounters in creature Lairs, Towers, et cetera, or when conquering the Fortress of a rival wizard who has already researched this spell.
Since the effects of Bless are triggered only by Death and Chaos spells and creatures, it should only be cast when expecting battle against them. This includes assaulting Encounter zones filled with such creatures, or when waging war against rival wizards possessing spells from these realms.
