|Spell Type||Combat Enchantment|
Every enemy unit on the battlefield suffers the following penalties:
Black Prayer is an Uncommon Combat Enchantment belonging to the Death Magic realm. It may be only cast during combat, for a basic Casting Cost of 35. As long as this spell is in effect on the battlefield, each and every enemy unit suffers a number of small but significant penalties. Each unit loses -1 strength off any damage-delivering attack it has, including Melee Attack, Ranged Attack, and any Special Attacks of this nature, like Fire Breath and Thrown Attack. Each unit also loses -1 off its Defense score, and -2 off its Resistance score.
Black Prayer lasts until dispelled or until the end of the battle, and thus does not have any Upkeep Costs.
Black Prayer engulfs all enemy units in dark energy which weakens them both physically and spiritually. This results in a small, yet significant drop in the enemy army's effectiveness, and more importantly makes all enemy units more susceptible to further Curses and other ill effects.
Melee Attack Penalty Edit
While Black Prayer is in effect, each and every enemy unit possessing a Melee Attack of any kind will lose -1 off the strength of this attack.
As a result, the enemy unit's maximum Melee Damage output is reduced, and vicariously its average damage per attack.
Any unit reaching a Melee Attack score of 0 or less cannot initiate a Melee Attack against any opponent, and will not deliver any Melee Damage during its Counter Attack. Note that a loss of the ability to attack voluntarily may also disable some Special Attacks, such as Fire Breath or Thrown Attacks, which do not work at all when Counter Attacking.
Ranged Attack Penalty Edit
While Black Prayer is in effect, each and every enemy unit possessing a Ranged Attack of any kind will lose -1 (or -1 or -1, as appropriate) off the strength of this attack.
As a result, the enemy unit's maximum Ranged Damage output is reduced, and vicariously its average damage per attack.
Any unit reaching a Ranged Attack score of 0 or less cannot use its Ranged Attack at all, even if it has ammunition or Mana remaining.
Special Attack Penalty Edit
While Black Prayer is in effect, each and every enemy unit possessing a Special Attack that delivers damage will lose -1 off the strength of this attack. If the unit has several such attacks, it will lose -1 off each of them.
As a result, the enemy unit's maximum Damage output from these attacks is reduced, and vicariously its average damage per attack.
The following Special Attacks are "damage-dealing", and will be affected by this spell:
If any affected attack is reduced to strength-0, it will no longer inflict any damage when used.
Defense Penalty Edit
While Black Prayer is in effect, each and every enemy unit loses -1 off its Defense score.
Resistance Penalty Edit
While Black Prayer is in effect, each and every enemy unit loses -2 off its Resistance score.
Black Prayer may be cast during combat, for the basic Casting Cost of 35. Its effects are felt immediately, and can be seen in the details window of each enemy unit.
After casting the spell, its icon will appear in the "Enchantments" window underneath the casting wizard's name. The spell will remain in effect until the end of battle, or until dispelled by the opponent. Since it does not carry on after the end of the battle, Black Prayer has no Upkeep Cost.
Customized Wizards possessing 11 Spellbooks at creation time may choose this spell as one of their default spells before starting the game, in which case the spell will already be researched and available for casting immediately on the first turn.
Wizards who possess at least 8 Spellbooks, or Wizards with 11 Spellbooks who did not select Black Prayer as a guaranteed spell, will be able to Research this spell at some point during their campaign. Wizards with fewer than 8 Spellbooks have a random chance of being able to Research it. The chance for this spell to appear increases with the number of Death Spellbooks the Wizard possesses or obtains during gameplay.
Black Prayer has a base Research Cost of 450.
With at least 1 Spellbook, the Black Prayer spell may be acquired as a reward for winning encounters in creature Lairs, Towers, et cetera, or when conquering the Fortress of a rival wizard who has already researched this spell.
Casting Black Prayer will instantly reduce the combat effectiveness of all enemy units on the battlefield, making it easier to win the battle.
The seemingly-low -1 penalties to the various attributes may seem very small, but they are of course quite significant when you consider that the entire enemy army suffers this simultaneously. Therefore Black Prayer is best cast when the enemy army contains plenty of units; the more enemy units there are, the more cost-effective this spell.
On top of all this, perhaps Black Prayer's best quality is that it reduces all enemy units' Resistance scores by -2. This makes them significantly more susceptible to the many Curses available to the Death wizard, and also makes them much more vulnerable to Special Attacks, which some Death creatures possess. Overall, Black Prayer should be used as a one-two punch with a secondary spell like Wrack, Word of Death, Death Spell, or other such spells from other realms.
