Barbarian Spearmen are a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created from a Barbarian town, for the Construction Cost of Icon Production.png 15.

Like all Spearmen, Barbarian Spearmen are a very basic combat unit which doesn't pose much of a threat to any serious opponent, though they can become a little stronger through Experience. While slightly more expensive than other Spearmen, they possess better Icon Resist.png Resistance and are capable of a weak Icon Thrown.png Thrown Attack which they deliver before charging into Melee combat.

Barbarian Spearmen require an Upkeep Cost of only Icon Food.png 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.

Unit Properties Edit

Physical Description Edit

Barbarian Spearmen are a group of humanoids, each with the vivid red hair common to all Barbarians and dressed only in green trousers. They carry spears - long shafts of wood tipped with sharp metal points. These are used for stabbing at enemies within hand-to-hand combat range. They also carry specialized throwing spears, which are lobbed at enemies just prior to a head-on charge.

Barbarian Spearmen are a Icon MultiFigureUnit.png Multi-Figure unit, containing Icon Figure.png 8 figures when fully healed.

Attack Properties Edit

Barbarian Spearmen initially possess a very weak Melee Attack, which will only be threatening to other low-tier Normal Units. It gets a little stronger with Experience, and is also backed up by a weak-but-useful Thrown Attack.

Each Spearman makes a Melee Attack with a strength of Icon Melee Normal.png 1. This delivers an average damage output of only Icon Damage.png 0.3, or rather, there is only a 30% chance for each Spearman to inflict any damage on the opponent, before allowing the opponent to make Defense rolls to deflect damage. Therefore the Barbarian Spearmen are highly unlikely to get through any armor at all.

Mitigating this slightly, a fully healed unit contains Icon Figure.png 8 Spearmen, so there are 8 separate chances to inflict damage. This still isn't much, so the Barbarian Spearmen's Melee Attack should not be counted upon to do any significant amount of damage to anything but the weakest enemy units, at least until they gain some Experience.

More importantly however, when the unit makes a voluntary Melee Attack against an enemy unit, it first executes a Thrown Attack, with a strength of Icon Thrown.png 1 per Spearman. Again, this will cause about Icon Damage.png 0.3 points of Damage on average, with 8 separate attempts to get through the enemy's armor. Any enemy Icon Figure.png figure that actually gets killed by this attack cannot deliver any Melee Damage back at the Spearmen.

Note that the Barbarian Spearmen may not use their Thrown Attack when Counter Attacking.

The Thrown Attack ability also allows Barbarian Spearmen to initiate Melee Attacks against enemy Flying units.

Defense Properties Edit

The Barbarian Spearmen possess a Defense score of Icon Defense.png 2 - just slightly stronger than their attack score. They can deflect about Icon Damage.png 0.6 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. This is rarely enough to save them from anything but the weakest attackers.

As with most Normal Units, each Barbarian Spearman possesses only Icon Hits.png 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Icon Damage.png Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its Icon Figure.png figures.

For purposes of defending against Curses and other combat maledictions, the Barbarian Spearmen have a rather-low Resistance score of Icon Resist.png 5 - barely enough to protect them from such effects. This is still slightly higher than the Resistance score of most Spearmen units.

Other Properties Edit

Barbarian Spearmen move at a slow Icon Movement Ground1, and can only traverse land tiles. The unit has no special movement properties.

Basic Strategy Edit

Barbarian Spearmen are the most basic (and weakest) Normal Unit available to the Barbarian race. These units are unlikely to pose a threat to anything other than enemy low-tier Normal Units.

A horde of Spearmen can gang up on a stronger unit in order to whittle it down. Fortunately, Barbarian Spearmen are fairly cheap to produce, and thus hordes of them are not too difficult to acquire.

Do not expect Barbarian Spearmen to stand up to any Fantastic Creature, at least not until they gain plenty of Experience. Even then, they are probably not going to win such an encounter.

  • Whenever this unit makes a Melee Attack against an enemy target, it also delivers a Thrown Attack with a strength of Icon Thrown.png 1 per Icon Figure.png figure.
  • All damage from a Thrown Attack is processed and delivered before the enemy gets the chance to retaliate. Any Icon Figure.png figures in the target unit that are killed by the attack do not get to deliver any Melee Damage in return.
  • This Thrown Attack does not occur when the unit is Counter Attacking against an enemy assailant.

Acquisition Edit

Barbarian Spearmen may be produced in any Barbarian Town. The town does not require any special Town Buildings to be constructed in order to create Barbarian Spearmen.

The Construction Cost of this unit is Icon Production.png 15.

Barbarian Spearmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Icon Gold.png Gold that depends on many different factors. Barbarian Spearmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
