Barbarian Bowmen are a type of Normal Unit. This unit may be created from a Barbarian town, for the Construction Cost of 30. The town must already contain both a Barracks and a Sawmill for this to be possible.
Like all Bowmen, Barbarian Bowmen provide a basic Ranged Attack capability, along with similarly basic Melee Attack and Defense properties. While unlikely to cause damage at most ranges, Barbarian Bowmen do become more deadly with Experience, and are useful when massed. They also possess a slightly better Resistance score than other Bowmen.
Barbarian Bowmen require an Upkeep Cost of 1 and 1 to maintain. Failure to pay these costs will result in the unit being disbanded automatically.
Unit Properties Edit
Physical Description Edit
Barbarian Bowmen are a group of humanoids, each with brown hair and dressed only in yellow trousers. They carry bows and arrows, which can be fired at enemies from a distance. They also carry short swords for situations where hand-to-hand combat is unavoidable.
Attack Properties Edit
Barbarian Bowmen have equally-strong Ranged Missile Attack and Melee Attack - both being quite weak. They may use their Ranged Attack up to 8 times before being forced to switch to Melee combat.
The Bowmen's Ranged Attack has a strength of 1. At very close range (up to 2 tiles from the target) each bowmen delivers an average of only 0.3 points of Damage - barely enough to penetrate the armor on any decent enemy unit. This value decreases further with distance, so even with all 6 Bowmen attacking together, actual damage to any target beyond 2 tiles away is unlikely.
The unit's Melee Attack has the same strength - 1 - but of course does not suffer from distance penalties as it cannot be used at a distance anyway. It will inflict an average of 0.3 Damage points per Bowman - again barely enough to get through any decent armor.
Fortunately, the damage output will grow as the unit gains Experience, but it will be virtually useless until then.
Defense Properties Edit
Barbarian Bowmen possess a Defense score of 1 - making them extremely vulnerable to damage. The unit can only block about 0.3 points of Damage from any damage source, on average. Pretty much any attack is guaranteed to injure this unit.
As with most Normal Units, each Barbarian Bowmen possesses only 1 Hit Point. In other words, each point of Damage inflicted on this unit will kill off one of its figures.
These values further serve to discourage allowing the Bowmen to engage in any Melee combat, as the unit will surely be destroyed.
For purposes of defending against Curses and other combat maledictions, the Barbarian Bowmen have a rather-low Resistance score of 5 - barely enough to protect them from such effects. This is still slightly higher than the Resistance score of most Bowmen units.
Other Properties Edit
Basic Strategy Edit
As explained above, Barbarian Bowmen are virtually useless when initially created, being barely able to cause any damage to enemy units.
During the very early game, Bowmen can confer some advantage against early enemy armies due to sheer volume of attacks. While the enemy slowly advances, the Bowmen can shoot repeatedly in an attempt to actually kill a few enemy figures before they reach your units. Sadly, this will stop working as soon as decently-armored enemies appear.
As a result, Barbarian Bowmen will generally tag along with other units, hoping to win Experience from any battles whether they contribute or not. This is the only way to prepare them to do real combat later on, when stronger enemies appear. In the late-early part of the campaign and beyond, low-level Barbarian Bowmen are absolutely useless until they can gain some serious Experience.
Ability Overview Edit
- This unit may use a Ranged Missile Attack instead of a Melee Attack up to 8 times in each battle. Once the unit's ammo is expended, it must resort to Melee Attacks.
Experience Table Edit
The following table illustrates how Barbarian Bowmen improve as they gain Experience. Any properties that are not listed here do not improve with Experience in any way.
|Level Icon||Level Name||EP||Melee||Ranged||To Hit||Defense||Resist||Hits|
|Recruit||0 - 19||1||1||30%||1||5||1|
|Regular||20 - 59||2||2||30%||1||6||1|
|Veteran||60 - 119||2||2||30%||2||7||1|
Average Damage Output Edit
The table below details the average amount of damage that each Figure in a Barbarian Bowmen unit will deliver with each type of attack, based on Experience Level. It can be used in comparison to the target's Defense rating to figure out the chance of hurting that target.
A town must contain both a Barracks and a Sawmill to be able to produce Barbarian Bowmen. Should a town lose an existing Barracks or Sawmill, it can no longer produce Barbarian Bowmen until replacement structures are built.
The Construction Cost of this unit is 30.
Barbarian Bowmen may appear for hire as Mercenaries. They may already have some Experience on being hired, and several units may be hired simultaneously. Hiring these units requires a certain cost in Gold that depends on many different factors. Barbarian Bowmen Mercenaries have the same Upkeep Cost as a normally-constructed unit.
